My Miracle Morning Routine + SUPER SMOOTHIE

I have never been much of a morning person, but for the past 6 months or so things have been completely different. Why? Because I have developed a morning routine that is nothing short of miraculous - a simple combination of taking it slow, waking the body up with yoga, giving it the vitamins I need (which I found out by taking this quiz), and a nutritious breakfast. Easy-peasy, hey? 

I've always known that I have highest energy in the morning, and by about mid-afternoon it starts to slowly dwindle away. And the key to harnessing the energy so that I can make the most of the day means starting slow and early. 

Why slow? I have found that if I slow down before I speed up, my energy doesn't peak and then slump and rather stays pretty steady for as long as I am done with work for the day. This doesn't mean that there aren't any exceptions to the rule - there are quite a few days when I wake up a bit later, don't have time to do yoga or enjoy a smoothie, all of which makes me appreciate the routine even more. 

RISE + SHINE

My best days are the ones that start without an alarm, just by the gentle sunrise waking me up from my sleep. I usually wake up at the same time, between 6am and 7am, followed by brief moment laying in bed, thinking of the day to come and practicing a bit of gratitude for what I have got. I find that mornings are such an important determinant for the rest of the day and this helps to start with a positive headspace.

 

YOGA + MEDITATION

Next, I brush my teeth, slip into my yoga wear and go to the kitchen where I drink a big glass of room-temperature water. Then I put my yoga mat down and do a slow, easy wake-up routine - mainly consisting of stretches, sun salutations, cat-cow and other simple, gentle moves - what ever else my body currently needs (if you need inspiration to get started then this was really helpful to me).

On some days this is followed by a light workout, but more often than not I just take a moment to meditate, right there on the mat. I wish I could say that I've got this meditation under lock but unfortunately we have had an on and off relationship for years (definitely something to work on). But for now, I enjoy a few mindful moments right there, focusing on my breathing and feeling good in my body. 

SMOOTHIE + VITAMINS

This is my most important bit - cramming as much goodness into the body so that I feel energized and healthy the rest of the day. I find that if my first meal is a smoothie or juice, then eating more whole foods and less junk is a lot less tricky for the rest of the day. And even if the food for the rest of the day does consist of toast and crisps then at least I can be sure that I got a good kick of nutrients in first thing. 

The basics for the smoothie are simple - frozen banana, dark leafy greens, handful of berries, some herbs or spices and plant milk. The rest is all up to you. The point is to cram as much healthy goodness into that smoothie as you can - it will make you feel SO good. Check out the recipe below!

The other thing is vitamins. As a vegan and generally pretty busy person I find that taking vitamins in the morning makes it a lot easier for me to be on top of the nutrients that I need to have every day. I took a quick, 5-minute quiz on Care/of regarding your goals and lifestyle (kind of like talking to a nutritionist), and then they send your personalized pack of vitamins to your house. It could not be more easier.

Mine consists on vegan essentials like B12, iron and veggie omegas, but also a probiotic blend, kanna (a herb for memory and cognitive focus) and rhodiola, which helps the body with stress. From the time that I have been taking them, I can already feel the difference in terms of having more energy and less stress (perhaps it is just more manageable!). In any case, I feel so happy to have found a company who makes it all so easy, rather than spending hours at the health shop, looking very confused and ending up buying stuff that I'll never even take. BREAKFAST + REST OF THE DAY

About two hours after waking up, I finally get to eating breakfast. It most often a simple avocado toast, overnight oats or just oats, all with copious amounts of toppings. If I have more time, then I'll make tofu scramble or a chickpea omlette. Or if I'm feeling fancy - a chia pudding papaya boat or pancakes.

I usually drink a cup of herbal tea or rooibos tea with ginger in it to go with breakfast, but the occasional almond milk cappuccino or turmeric latte will also slip in. 

While I eat my breakfast and sip my drink, I compile a to-do list for the day. I don't know about you but I love making lists. Almost as much as I love ticking things off them. 

So this is my simple morning routine, which can be changed up as much as possible to fit you and your day. I'm sure that not a lot of people can have time to spare like this - whether it is because of kids, or a long commute or whatever reason - but perhaps slowing it down a bit and taking a little time for yourself is just what you need. My morning SUPER SMOOTHIE

What you need:

1 banana, cut into pieces and frozen

1 large handful of berries (the darker the better)

1 handful of baby spinach

1/4 tsp turmeric

1/4 tsp grated fresh ginger

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1-2 dates (optional)

unsweetened plant milk, to your desired consistency

+ sometimes I also add a bit of vegan protein powder, chia seeds, flax seeds, holy basil (tulsi) or any other fruit/berries I currently have. 


Method:

Place everything in a blender and blend until very smooth. Drink right away.
